Our first event in 2021 was an online meeting with the Chief Downstream Operations Officer of OMV Aktiengesellschaft, DI Thomas Gangl on 28 January. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 situation it was another online meeting instead of a visit to the company. However Executive Board Member DI Thomas Gangl offered us after the meeting a visit to the OMV-Refinery at a later date.

OMV produces and markets oil and gas, innovative energy and high-end petrochemical solutions. With Group sales of EUR 23 bn and a workforce of around 20,000 employees in 2019, OMV Aktiengesellschaft is one of Austria’s largest listed industrial companies. In Upstream, OMV has a strong base in Central and Eastern Europe as well as a balanced international portfolio, with Middle East & Africa, the North Sea, Russia and Asia-Pacific as further core regions. Daily average production was 487,000 boe/d in 2019. DI Thomas Gangl - Member of the Executive Board/Chief Downstream Operations Officer
Born 1971 in Reichersberg, Upper Austria.Thomas Gangl began his OMV career in 1998 as a process engineer at the Schwechat refinery after studying process engineering at the Vienna University of Technology and mechanical engineering at the University of Salford (Manchester). In 2011, he became General Manager of OMV Deutschland GmbH and Site Manager in Burghausen. In 2014 he was appointed as Site Manager in Schwechat and 2016 he took over the role as Senior Vice President of the Business Unit Refining & Petrochemicals with responsibility for all three OMV refineries. Since July 1, 2019, Thomas Gangl is Executive Board Member responsible for Refining & Petrochemical Operations.
Q&A session
The excellent and very informative presentation was followed by an online Q&A session. DI Thomas Gangl was ready to answer all the questions concerning OMV such as its upstream activities like oilfields in Libya and gas fields in Russia and Romania, the situation concerning gaspipelines and the hub Baumgarten, the downstream activities concerning the refineries in Schwechat and Burghausen explaining its competition in Central Europe concerning refinery products, the acquisition of a 75% shares majority of Borealis, the future planning in the oil and gas as well as the chemical business and last but not least the strategy of OMV concerning its sustainability goals such as the circular economy, the sustitution of crude oil and reaching the net-zero emission that is to say low-emission technologies and carbon capture and hydrogen.
