Insights & Trends presented by the Criminal Intelligence Service Austria, the Complexity Science Hub Vienna, and Cyber Risk Deloitte.
Cyber Crime and the Crypto World
have been increasingly affecting individuals, societies, economies and governmental authorities equally across all areas around the globe. Insights into the current situation (particularly in Austria), outlooks and expected trends were presented to the members by the Criminal Intelligence Service Austria, the Complexity Science Hub Vienna, and Cyber Risk Deloitte.
Criminal Intelligence
Service (CIS) Austria
CIS Austria, stands for preventing and combating crime on the
national level. CIS Austria is also the central national and international
point of contact for police cooperation and as such supports the Provincial
Criminal Intelligence Departments (CIDs) and all subordinate police
authorities. Among the essential responsibilities of CIS Austria are crime
strategy and in-service training of police experts. Currently, about 800
officers work at the CIS Austria in seven specialized departments.
One of the departments deals with Economic Crime with its
sub-departments, namely the Reporting Office for Money Laundering (FIU -
Financial Intelligence Unit), the Sub-Department Financial Investigations and
Asset Recovery and the Sub-Department for Fraud, Forgery and Economic Crime.
This last sub-department is responsible for fighting CyberCrime in the broader
sense.
Complexity Science
Hub (CSH) Vienna
The CSH is a
non-university research institution that specializes in the development of
modern data-driven analysis methods and models to analyze questions related to
major societal challenges in areas such as economics, health, environment, and
public administration in a data-based, comprehensive, and interdisciplinary
manner. By applying scientific and technical expertise, large datasets are
merged to quantify, monitor, and ideally develop the structure and resilience
of systems and networks in an optimal and participatory manner.
The research
group "Cryptofinance," led by Dr. Bernhard Haslhofer, focuses on the
analysis of cryptoasset transaction networks and develops new algorithmic
methods to investigate money flows in these networks. The current focus is on
analyzing complex, decentralized financial products (DeFi) that are based on
crypto-assets."
